One Lovely Blog Award

olba

Wow! Just a few short months ago I carved out this little place on the internet, and I’m so happy to have found others who enjoy video games and analyzing them like they are a worthwhile medium (because, you know, they are). I’m flattered at how many people have taken the time to read and comment on the blog, and even more flattered by the ones who like it enough to follow! So, thank you!

The kind Boba over at Boba and Games recently nominated me for the One Lovely Blog Award, and I’m so touched that this blog made it onto her list of nominations. Thank you for stopping by, staying, and thinking this blog is lovely!

Seven Things About Myself

  1. I have two degrees in music (finishing a master’s degree), and play around five instruments reasonably well (a few more if I’m allowed to fake) but my primary instrument (read: first love) is the violin, which I’ve played since I was 6.
    (1 1/2. I’ve played at Carnegie Hall 🙂 )
  2. My “to read” book list is about twice as long as my “to play” game list, which will already take me years to complete at the rate I’m going!! (haha)
  3. My favorite color is purple.
  4. I’m very introverted, so if we ever meet in the real world I might not say much at first, but once you get me going I will never shut up.
  5. I’m a big believer in “play the game how you want to,” so I don’t really have a problem with anyone (including myself) using mods, knocking down the difficulty, or using cheats in order to experience the game in a way that will be enjoyable for you, regardless of whether I would use your particular “game enhancement” or not. At the end of the day, it’s a game. Have fun with it!
  6. I know how to sail a sailboat, which is a lot of fun.
  7. As an extension of my penchant for over-analyzing games (and books and movies), I also write fanfiction when I have a chance.

Nominees

I’m going to try and limit myself to ten, which is very difficult because I really think all of you are great.

  1. VeryVeryGaming was the first person who followed this blog. He was so very encouraging, and I always look forward to reading his reviews and commentaries on games!
  2. Some of the most thoughtful and in-depth game reviews I have read have come from Red Metal over at Extra Life. I am always impressed by his knowledge of game history and the attention to detail he has in all of his reviews.
  3. Likewise, SquareBlind offers some fantastic commentary on games and the industry that are always thought-provoking!
  4. If you’re looking for no-nonsense thoughts on games or enjoy visual novels, Aether over at Lost to the Aether has you covered!
  5. Cary over at Recollections of Play offers some of the most down-to-earth comments on games I’ve read, and I always think her blog posts feel like sitting down with a friend to have a chat. She also does Let’s Plays, which are fun to watch 🙂
  6. I Played the Game offers reviews with a touch of humor, as well as lists of Top 5s and other video game wonderfulness.
  7. The Shameful Narcissist, over at The Shameful Narcissist Speaks, offers a variety of posts on games, books, and writing, and she is another one of the very encouraging bloggers I’ve met since I started this adventure.
  8. Astro Adam over at Video Games Nebula offers some of the sweetest, most gentle observations of video games, video game culture, and game enthusiasts I have ever seen. You should read his blog. Seriously. Just go there now.
  9. LightningEllen is, like most of us, busy Conquering the Gaming Backlog, but is always up for an in-depth chat about games, and her amiibo collection is quite impressive!
  10. Shelby “Falcon509” Steiner offers all matter of reviews, opinions, and news at the Falcon Reviews Blog with a touch of humor and familiarity that makes each post memorable.

I’m so  happy to know you all (and the many others that aren’t listed here, or that I didn’t list because you were nominated by Boba) in this virtual world of ours!

Thank you for stopping by (and for staying!) and I’ll see you soon!

  1. Awww that’s lovely! Thank you for the shout out! I’ll have to pass as I have already done a Lovely Blogger and time is woefully limited now the new term has begun!
Sailing a boat is amazing! I tried to do it once with…mixed results.

    1. You’re very welcome! I’m glad to hear other folks think your blog is lovely, as well! (And I understand. Good luck with your classes!)

Yes, sailing is definitely a bit of an art form at times haha. But it *is* a lot of fun!!

  2. Thank you for the kind words, and for putting my blog up for this 🙂 I really enjoy writing in my blog, and it makes me happy that others enjoy reading what I write.

Keep up the good work on here, and I hope to see more of what you’ll be posting soon!

Gonna check out some of those other sites you listed in the meantime.

  3. Aw, thank you for such a kind write-up! I’m really curious now as to how I came across your blog in the first place… I think it might have been searching for the “storytelling in videogames” tag on WordPress, OR it was via a comment you left on Aether’s blog…? I don’t know, but however it came about I’m glad it did! Doubly so if it encouraged you to keep on blogging. I definitely remember the first “proper” commenter I had respond to posts on my blog and have a special appreciation for them, so if I can play the same role for someone else that’s super awesome.

    1. You know, I can’t remember either, but I remember being so happy when I saw your thoughtful comment on my storytelling post (and again with all my meanderings about choices in games)!! They definitely helped reinforce that I was doing something alright! So thank you again for that first comment (and for every comment afterwards!) and for sticking around this long! 🙂

    2. Yeah, I have to second that. It’s a powerful thing, having people you don’t know and who don’t owe you any social graces read and appreciate the stuff you write. We are putting words out there on the internet that strangers are absorbing and connecting with and making into tiny little parts of their own lives. We have our own little communities here. I’m a pretty selfish person, so I started blogging just because I had some ideas that I wanted to get out there in the world, but nowadays it’s the connections and the circles that I’ve been able to be a part of because of it that really keeps me going. Well, mostly. I haven’t stopped loving the sound of my own voice just yet.

Also, Carnegie Hall, eh? Man, I played in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and I though that was impressive, but I’ve got nothing on that. Do you still keep up with the music?

      1. We all must like how we sound, since we’re all here posting our ideas on the interwebs 😉 Glad to be part of the community here!

Yeah, it was a great experience! The sound in that hall… wow. I do try to keep up with it as much as I can, but I don’t have many performance opportunities anymore, since my music-related job is not performance-related. I still love playing, though. LightningEllen suggested I put up some music-related things if I get that YouTube channel up and running, so we’ll see how that goes!

And St. Patrick’s Cathedral is amazing! That must have been such a great time. What do/did you play?

        1. I hope you do manage to get some up. It’d be nice to have the opportunity to hear.

I was good at the clarinet, and most of my credits of note are off of that, but I’ve also played saxophone. Kept up with the clarinet at least all through college, but haven’t touched it since.

          1. Aw, thanks! 🙂

That’s great that you played the clarinet. I’ve tried in vain to play instruments that require wind to play, and… yeah I’ll stick with strings. But I love the sound of the clarinet when it’s played by someone who knows what they’re doing! (read: not me).

It’s hard to keep up after college. So many opportunities just dry up.

  4. Congrats on the award! You’ve only been here a few months? You have created a very impressive blog in such a short time.

You are quite educated in music! I’d like to hear some of your music added to your upcoming Let’s Play videos. 🙂 I’m also very introverted, but I think I’ve already had the “I’m a INFJ” conversation with you, lol. You are so right. Video games are all about having fun and relaxing. I’ll admit that sometimes I forget that when I’m battling my backlog. I’d also like to read some of you fanfictions.

Oh and thank you for the lovely nomination! You have chosen a lot of great bloggers that I have the honor of following as well.

    1. Thanks! Yup, I’ve only been here since the end of August! I’m unfortunately about 85% unemployed at the moment (sigh… long story), so I’ve had a bit of time on my hands to write articles.

Maybe I’ll post some music on there! My never-ending saga with figuring out my set-up is continuing to be never-ending, but I think I’ve finally figured out *what* the problems are (I think). So… at some point I’ll be able to post stuff!

Isn’t it interesting how a hobby can suddenly feel like a job? I was just over on Cary’s blog and she mentioned a similar feeling. I know I have to remind myself sometimes (with the blog, and soon with the Let’s Plays) that I’m doing this because I think it’s fun and to “cool my jets” a little bit.

And thanks! I just got accepted into the Archive of Our Own beta. I also just got slammed with a whole bunch of thesis stuff, so posting my fanfic is another “at some point” goal. I’ll keep you posted!

You are very welcome. Your blog is quite lovely (as the award implies)!

  5. You’ve played at Carnegie Hall? They say the best way to get there is practice, so that must’ve been quite an honor!

And thanks for the shout-out! I’m glad you’ve been enjoying my reviews that much. Your stuff is good too; you bring up many interesting points in your editorials.

  6. First, thank you so much for your nomination and your kind words ♥♥ I’m so flattered to receive this 🙂

You play my favorite instrument! Even though I started on the piano around the same time you did violin, I’ve always had a penchant for strings. They’re the instruments that come closest to the human voice and when well played always give me a shiver. I played violin a little bit in elementary school, but didn’t continue with it for as long as I would’ve liked.

    1. You’re welcome! Thank you for being such a lovely blogger!

It’s my favorite instrument too! 😀 Yes, strings are absolutely special instruments, and I agree that nothing is better than a well-played string instrument (particularly violin cough cough haha). Glad you had a chance to dabble in it, at the least!

      1. ♥♥♥

It really is the best instrument family, and I say that as a piano player 🙂 I’ve grown a bit more fond of the cello in my old age just due to the low, mellowness of sound, but you can’t have a sting quartet with just one instrument.
