Setting Up a Let’s Play, Week 1

Because those who know me in the real world know that when I do anything, it winds up as an adventure, I thought I’d chronicle this little set-up process and things that I’m learning along the way for anyone who might be interested. So this might not be a series that goes on forever, but I hope it entertains you while it lasts!

Also, I’ll eventually be talking about the different products that I’m using and take some pictures of the actual set-up, if you guys are interested in that.

You can check out our full journey here.

Historical Background

I started batting this idea around in my head along time ago, and took my first baby steps into Let’s Playing in August, when I took the plunge, did some research, and purchased a game capture device. The plan was that I would use it triumphantly after completing my thesis in December.

So I started acquiring the various wires and bits needed to capture epic gameplay and post it on the interwebs. I was most excited for a microphone, which I’ve been wanting to purchase to record music with, so I had an “excuse” to really splurge with a cardiod condenser mic and some sweet phantom power.

well-done

Then I realized that my lovely CRT TV would need a little extra love and care to make this work, and so I set to work drawing diagrams as to how I could set up 21st century technology to a television that only has one coaxial input. Keep in mind this TV has a Wii, a PS3, a PS4, and a Nintendo64 all hooked into it, so I felt more than up for the challenge. My channel selector had been dying, so I purchased a new one and rewired my whole configuration. It would be easy to wire in one more device. So a few more wires later, and with the addition of an HDMI-to-RCA converter and HDMI splitter, I was ready!

And then I found out my thesis would be delayed. So I mournfully packed away my capture device – not even tempting myself with hooking it up – and hunkered down into my insane thesis-driven life.

But promises are promises, so I decided that I would continue trying to set up a Let’s Play in January. Another diagram and a few conversations with my friend BadgersAndBowties later, I circled a date in red ink and started to set it all up.

Which brings me to this week.

Current State of Affairs

My room looks like an insane spider wove a web of wires around it, and everything is working perfectly!

Except for the capture device.

liara-facepalm

Four and a half hours, a few rage-filled texts to a friend, 16 YouTube videos, and one phone call to customer service later, I find out that the device may be faulty. But wait. There’s more.

Because I purchased it so long ago (from Amazon), the window to return it has closed. And because I purchased through a third-party seller (even though it was labeled as “new”) I’m fairly certain the device isn’t under warranty.

y-u-no
Y U no work?

One very polite email to the seller later, and I’m sitting here covered in wire-webs.

Lessons Learned This Week

  • Hook up your new toys as soon as you get them, even if it means having to put them away too soon.

Like I mentioned, my goal for videos going up in January meant it would probably happen by March, so we’re right on schedule with that 😉

Am I crazy for continuing? Do you have any tips for me? Let me know!

Thanks for stopping by, and I’ll see you soon!

  1. I hope you manage to get it sorted soon. I do like Let’s Plays.
I was looking into this myself last week as part of setting up a 24 hour charity stream, but it’s proving to be a bit tricky, especially considering my ancient PC. So instead I’m going to rely on Xbox one, PS4 and OBS to stream and save myself the hassle! You’re far braver than I!

    1. Thanks! I’ll definitely keep you posted! 🙂

That’s awesome that you want to set up a charity stream. That’s something I’ve thought about as well. Maybe if I get the whole Let’s Play thing down, I’ll feel a little better about playing/talking live.

Good luck with your stream, and let me know when it’s up and running!

  2. Good luck on your quest! I work with technology and have filled tech support job roles in the past. I assume technology knows I can fix it and works for me out of fear. 9 times out of 10, when someone came to me with an issue, me just looking at it made it work, haha.

Personally, I only watch LPs from blogger people I follow. I like playing the games myself but I enjoy watching people I know embark on gaming adventures. Keep up your struggle! I can’t wait to watch yours when you are up and running 🙂

    1. Thanks! Usually things work out, but I’ve occasionally threatened the tech with unplugging it, throwing it out the window, or taking a hammer to it, and that seems to do the trick. My friend is also a lucky charm, but this capture device baffled me. Maybe I’ll send you a picture so you can look at it and scare it into submission!!

And thank you, I appreciate your support!

      1. Threatening it can do wonders too. I’d be happy to scare your technology into working like it is damn well suppose to! My signature “Lightning glare of death” is ready to unleash, if you need to send me a picture of the delinquent pile of circuits, haha.

  3. Good luck on this endeavor! I actually bought a capture card a while ago in hopes of starting a YouTube channel or something and quickly realized I’m much more entertaining in blog format xD. Nowadays I use the capture card to collect screenshots for my blog or to stream directly to old roomies or other friends who like to watch me play :).

    1. Thanks! Yeah this isn’t something I’m trying to make into a living or anything; it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while so I’m giving it a shot! If it goes over like a lead balloon, I can at least check it off my bucket list 🙂

  4. I’m raging with you over that capture device and shaking my fist. What an absolute crock! Any chance you’ve heard back from the seller, and they’re going to be decent and return your money? I wish I had some advice, but I’m in the baby steps phase of LPing myself with less equipment. Wish I had more advice to give :\

    1. I appreciate the sympathy rage! I haven’t heard back yet. We’ll see. If nothing comes of it, it will just be tuition to the school of experience. It’s only mone- *cough* It’s only mon- *gag* Only money (that was easier to say when I wasn’t a poor grad student! haha) I’ll let you know how it goes!

  5. That’s the way it always works, though, isn’t it? Any sort of major endeavor that requires technology, something will fail when it’s time to finally start it. I’ve had waaay too many presentations that went the same way, and the tech there’s been so much simpler than let’s playing.

Good luck getting everything set up again! And hey, on the bright side, this will give you a bit more time to prepare, so when you do get something out you’ll be able to put a lot more quality into it.

    1. Always! I should have known it would be trouble; technology always has a way of “getting you good” when you least expect it.

And thanks! You’re right; now I have more time to practice talking to myself/commentating while playing without actually having anything recording!

  6. Good luck with it! I decided to start a gaming channel for this year too, as my new adventure, but I’m staying away from capture cards because it’s a headache and a half :’D
Hope you figure it out and it works out!
Which software you using to get the footage? OBS works well, and could also be from it all :’D

    1. Thanks! I was actually planning on using the software that came with the device to capture gameplay, and then use my very rudimentary editing software to actually edit it. Unfortunately without a working device I can’t experiment with that end of things yet! 🙂

I’ve heard the name (initials?) OBS, but isn’t that for streaming only?

      1. True, hope that works out for you!
Uuh, noooo. I guess the majority isn’t aware you can record games and even footage from capture devices with it. You can also capture audio with webcam + game at the same time, which is what I’m doing because I’m lazy. OBS has progressed a lot, it even lets you save/record multiple audio tracks for one single video.
        Hope that helps!
