Setting Up a Let’s Play, Week 3 *Updated*

Week three already? If you’re just stopping in for this little adventure, you can catch up on all my shenanigans here.

Historical Background

I’ve given up on pursuing a refund for my faulty equipment, if you’ve been following that saga. I’ve also been checking out another device, and I have it in my possession, AND I remembered my lesson learned from Week 1, so I even tested it! I also got a little adapter for my earbuds so I can hear the sound through headphones and not the television. Thank you to Aether and One Depressed Gamer for their tips on headphone usage, and to The Otaku Judge for encouraging me to follow up with Amazon about my capture device…

Current State of Affairs

I had a terrible cold, complete with sore throat, fever, and coma-like sleep for most of this past week, so I only have one little updates. I hooked up the new device, wires and all, and figured all the audio issues I had with voice recording and getting the sounds from the game.

well-done

I also decided to save footage on an external hard drive that I have, to save a little space on my poor, unsuspecting computer’s memory. The file got lost a few times between the capture device and the hard drive, but baby steps… Once I get it all working and the video edited, I’ll post my test-video here!

(edit: Oh hey, a video!

Please pardon my voice; I’m still a little sick and don’t usually sound like a congested frog…. Any mechanical comments are appreciated. I know the audio got a little off and I’m trying to fix it, but comments on the audio balance between voice and game)

Lessons Learned

  1. Perseverance, man. If only my thesis went this smoothly (and this is after the faulty capture device debacle!).
  2. (edit: My video editing software is sort of annoying, but it still manages to get the job done!)

But seriously, I’ve learned quite a bit about all the behind-the-scenes works of recording.

I’ll be checking out the YouTube end of things this week and figuring all that out, so hopefully soon everything will be under way!

I don’t have any pertinent questions for this week, but check back tomorrow to see if I got the video working!!

Also, if you love watching folks play games, my fellow blogger iplayedthegame is participating in a 24-hour gaming marathon to support Special Effects, an organization dedicated to making video games accessible to individuals with disabilities. He wrote up a wonderful description with all the details, but if you’re around at all February 21, definitely check out his stream and support a good cause, either with your time and support, or with some pocket change if you have it to spare.

Thanks for stopping by, and I’ll see you soon!

  1. I really hope you can get it going. When I started streaming, it was a nightmare and I luckily had the support of a tech-savvy partner who whipped everything together for me. I’m mildly better at understanding what is going on with that stuff now, so feel free to ask if you need help.

    1. Ruined my life? Far from it! It’s so much fun! Like I said, I was sitting there with all my muscles tensed but I was really having a good time!!

Oh, and thank you! I’m actually thinking of playing through Mass Effect since Andromeda is coming out, but I’m also considering Dragon Age since I can talk about that game absolutely non-stop haha. Huge, enormous games, I know, but… *shrugs*

      1. I just hope one day to complete the first board hehe. I’ve tried them all, but the other levels are even harder with different “gimmicks.”

I would totally watch a Dragon Age Let’s Play, though it is on my backlog to play myself (one day lol).

  2. That reminds me of a rhythm game called Bit.Trip Runner that was released on WiiWare back in 2010.

Anyway, hope you get better soon! It’ll be interesting to see what other games you decide to Let’s Play. I’ve always enjoyed the format whether they’re humorous or informative (or both).

    1. I just checked out Bit Trip Runner. That looks even more complicated, but like a like of fun, as well.

And thanks, I just can’t seem to kick the remaining bits of this cold! Knowing me the games will be long RPGs (haha?), but I’ll leave it up to you guys as to whether you think they’re informative or humorous 🙂

  3. Oh, a video!

Glad to see you got thinks working up to the point you could record something 🙂
Loved the fact that you struggled so hard to speak on those tense parts of the game! I felt almost the same way just by watching – something like “You…will…make it thr-awww, damn!”

Anyways, good job 🙂 I’m gonna follow the YT channel to get the videos first hand when they pop!

      1. Stammering? There’s a word I had to Google to make sure I understood what it meant! *learned something new today*
Yes, stammering commentary added some personality to the video, if you ask me. I think it makes a video sound much more genuine – not saying that if you don’t stammer the video doesn’t feel genuine, though (I assume I can use the word like this).

I’ll be looking forward to watching those 🙂

  4. Having a cold sucks! Hope things are going better for you now. Great first video though! The impossible Game looks incredibly addictive so I’m going to stay away from it, haha. Can’t wait to see more now that your technology is behaving itself 🙂
