We’re here! We made it! We got through 30 weeks of questions about video games!! WOOT!

Of course, the last day of such a huge challenge deserves a huge question, right?? Here we go!

Day 30: What is your favorite game of all time?

…oh. Well, okay. You guys deserve an epic answer, so here we go!

dragon age tapestry

Yup. This is the actual tapestry representation of my favorite game ever, as produced by the Dragon Age Keep. Like many games that have special places in our hearts, this game came into my life when I needed it most, for a lot of reasons, one of which I already talked about in another post.

But the idea of someone being pulled away from everything familiar, taking on a monumental task, and still somehow keeping themselves together – in fact, thriving – before achieving their goal was a story that really burrowed its way into my brain and helped me keep forward momentum even when that felt like an insurmountable task.

And I didn’t even have to fight a dragon

I’ve probably played this game only about six or seven times, but that does represent around 400 hours of game time, not including DLC. But that does include the *cough* three times I played through the game in a row. Sadly, I still haven’t achieved a platinum trophy, because I played through the game almost the exact same way a few times, and so am missing a few origin stories, but… I just read that paragraph again…. 400 hours. Right there that’s something.

Speaking of replaying a game immediately upon finishing it, this is probably my second-favorite game:

Besides being an all around solid game (pun intended), this is another game that sort of fell into my life at a time I needed an over-the-top fantasy world to jump into. The game deals with such a serious matter, but plays out like an action cartoon or comic book that it could still provide the level of escapism I needed and wanted, while also giving me an in-depth and serious story that I could get lost in.

I won’t bore you with details of my life, but this was another game that I have played “on repeat.” I play it after Christmas and before New Years every year, so while I’m not sure this takes the “favorite” slot, it’s still an incredibly important game to me.

So there we have it! 30 days of questions about video games successfully answered and discussed! What about you? What’s your favorite game? What’s your second favorite game? Let me know why in the comments!

Thanks for stopping by, and I’ll see you soon!

  1. 30 weeks sure flew by! Wow… Congrats on completing the challenge!! I know I played DA II three times, right after each other. I’m definitely looking forward to playing the superior DA Origins soon! Looks like it will be an awesome journey 🙂 I’m also really glad you were able to find support in these two great games during times when you needed it most! I definitely understand the power of video games in that regard.

My all-time favourite game award goes LoZ Ocarina of Time. I’m not sure why, but I fell in love with that world. I’ll never forget pulling the Master Sword for the first time, finding Epona, or delivering the final blow to Ganon. I must have beaten the game 20+ times (so likely 400+ hours in it). My childhood best friend use to love watching me beat it, haha. I pretty sure I could get through the Water Temple with my eyes closed now. I even started writing a guide for it when I was a teenager. It was fun, but I never finished it.

My second favourite game is three games: FFXIII, FFXIII-2, and Lightning Returns. I know I’ve put 300+ hours in those, and Platinumed all three. Some of the trophies required a huge time investment, but I didn’t mind spending more time with my shero. These glorious games came to me during a dark time in my life. I’ll always consider Lightning Farron my all-time favourite character, and a critical source of strength and hope for the future. 🙂 Despite what the angry internet jury says, I also think Square Enix did a fantastic job delivering a superb story, shiny graphics, and innovative gameplay in all three of these games. *Disclaimer: My opinion is VERY biased.

I’ve only played through the FFXIII trilogy once though. This may sound silly, but I don’t want to risk ruining the special feelz I have by playing them again. I guess it’s kind of like how if I listen to a special song too many times, it starts to lose the specialness to me. I’m weird… Anyway, if Square Enix ever does a remake I will definitely check it out! I’d be happy to platinum them again on PS4, haha.

    1. OoT is a great game! I remember being so terrified of the Forest Temple when I was little (because I’m a dork), and how proud I was when I actually made it through. I felt like I could defeat anything after having to deal with those creepy-crawly wallmasters…

I can understand why you’d only play through FF13 once, first because it was so special to you, and secondly because it might represent a chapter of your life that’s over now. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for a PS4 remake, anyway 🙂

      1. I found the Forest Temple so haunting, yet kind of beautiful at the same time. The music really set off a whole tranquil ancient/mystical vibe that I loved. I remember my first encounter with a Wallmaster there… *shudders* The Bottom of the Well and the Shadow Temple still freak me out a tiny bit (okay, a lot). You just never get use to being hugged by a Redead, haha.

I think you’ve just made me realize the second reason why I’ve only played the FF13 trilogy once! Thanks, Goddess of Wisdom 🙂

        1. Oh my goodness the music was so great. And… Yeah the Bottom of the Well and the Shadow Temple were horrible. Freaking redeads. I’d almost want to do a let’s play of OoT just so everyone can hear my thought process when those awful things show up. Ugh.

          And… any time 😉

          1. My initial thought process with Redeads is: “KILL IT with Din’s Fire!!”. Then my logic takes over and I remember that the Sun’s Song is my BFF 🙂

I would totally love to watch a OoT LP by you, if you did one! I still plan to watch your Mass Effect one as soon as I finally play it myself first. Hopefully I’ll get to it before the apocalypse…

            1. Yeah, I’m using hanging in the doorway going “Oh god, oh god, oh god, okay RUN RUN RUN, ELF BOY!”

Haha no rush. I still have a bunch of Mass Effect to get through! I’d love to play through more games, just… My living situation just isn’t set up well for that right now. Once day I’ll get back to it!

              1. “RUN Elf boy, RUN!” Now I really, really want to see you do a OoT LP someday 🙂

I remember reading about all the work you put into your setup. I hope you get the chance to make more awesome LPs soon!

  2. Congratulations on finishing the challenge! 😀

Oh goodness, I went straight to a new game right after finishing Origins, too. It is a game worth repeating though, not only because of the different origins, but because you can miss a lot of things on the first run. Also, I have this game (and Skyrim) to thank for curing me of being a completist. There was no way I could finish The Darkspawn hronicles, I felt horrible while playing the first 10 minutes of it.

    1. Thanks! 😀

Definitely; there are a lot of things that I only caught my second time around, but I just figured it was because I was new to RPGs and had no idea what I was doing the first time haha.

Oh, Darkspawn Chronicles. I played it only once… I think I managed to get all the trophies for it, but I think I was more driven by trying to collect codices and see what the game had to say about each character. Like how Leliana and Alistair were rumored to be lovers……… 😡 (haha I jest, of course. I could see the attraction). It was also interesting to see the whole “alternate universe” thing. But you’re right. I felt pretty terrible about the whole thing, even though it really drove home that it was the playable Warden, and not Alistair, who was needed to defeat the archdemon, so I thought that was a nice touch.

      1. I gave up and read the codices online. 🙂

I think I only (only!) killed Oghren and Wynne from the party’s characters. After that I was like, nope, I cannot do this. Still, it is a good “what if” idea for the reason you mentioned, and extra information is always welcome. My favourite part was learning Herren is a desire demon. I mean, it’s nice to know there are good(ish) demons out there, just as there are crappy spirits.

Leliana and Alistair make sense as a pairing considering they are the more outwardly righteous, paladin-adjacent type of characters in the group. I accidentally romanced both of them on my first run by being nice to them and a do-gooder in almost every quest, so it figures they’d be into each other.

        1. Is Herren canonically a desire demon? I thought the Darkspawn Chronicles were an “alternative universe,” but I guess it makes sense, since he *was* sort of grumpy and wanted to give Wade what he wanted so he could benefit…..

…yeah… I guess…. For a while I didn’t want to have them both in my party at the same time, because I thought they might go for each other, but…. yeah, I guess I can see how they’d be attracted to each other… I guess…. grumble grumble…. haha

          1. I am not sure. If the only thing that changes is that which the Warden does to end the Blight, then it follows Herren is a desire demon in the other timeline/universe/reality. I think it’s pretty funny that Herren is such a crappy desire demon,he keeps Wade from doing his art by trying to run a business efficiently (unless what Wade really wants is love, in which case that is kind of cute for a desire demon!).

Regarding Leliana and Alistair, just because they make sense it doesn’t mean I didn’t go “That’s loyalty to you” when I read about it. 😛

  3. Dragon Age is so amazing! I haven’t been able to dip in to any of the DA:I DLC, sadly because time is far too precious these days. Additionally I’ve also had to give up on my multiple playthroughs of most games. Even though I had two polar opposite playthroughs of both the 1st ME trilogy and DA:O and DA2.

    1. Isn’t it great?? I love it. Although, most of those playthroughs were either back-to-back, or during a period of unemployment, so I had a bit of an advantage. Replaying games is so hard now, isn’t it, especially if you’re into RPGs? I find I still make time for some game, though, and Dragon Age Origins is one of them!!

I have to get better at playing differently through different playthroughs. I find I usually find a story I like, and then just “do it” that way over and over again. Oops? haha

Thanks for the comment and the follow!!

  4. I must admit I’m a bit surprised by Metal Gear Solid 2. Not because it’s a bad game, I really enjoy that whole series myself! That one was a bit less heavily hinted at, though. Still, you’re right though. It really skirts that whole ‘serious game that doesn’t take itself seriously’ thing much better than any other experience out there.

    1. I’m full of surprises, what can I say? Haha

Yeah, I guess that game is more quietly loved. But I’m a huge fan of the series! I’m sitting here trying to tease apart why I’d pick Dragon Age over MGS2, really, because I’ve definitely played the latter more times, but I can’t really come up with anything. Maybe it really was the role-playing elements of Dragon Age that sucked me into the story, rather than playing through “someone else’s” story. Hm now I’ll have to think about that.

      1. Well, enjoyment of any work of art is a very internal thing, more emotional than logical. If it’s what you enjoy more, it’s what you enjoy more, no matter how you try to pick it apart.
