Let’s Talk About…: A Good Game

So, I got used to these types of posts and I decided to continue! This will have a bit of a different flavor than the Video Game Challenge that was just wrapped up, insofar as this one delineates specific games to talk about. I figure this will be a fun challenge for me, as some of the games I’m not very familiar with, and is also another opportunity for you guys to talk all about your favorite gaming experiences. So here we go!

Let’s Talk About… Your Favorite Game

Seriously? I never stop talking about my favorite game.

I suppose something interesting about the game that doesn’t involve me gushing about how much I love it so much, is that I’m planning on comparing another of this series, Dragon Age: Inquisition, to Mass Effect: Andromeda. I’m also working up the courage to start a new theology post, now that I have a little more information gleaned from Inquisition DLC.

Someone in the physical world asked why I haven’t written an “Interesting Case of…” post for Dragon Age: Origins, and the truth of it is that I don’t think I could be as objective as I’d want to be. This is a game that I really, really love. It has flaws, but I can’t bring myself to analyze the stuffing out of it as a game. The closest I came was in this comparison post, and even for that it was hard to keep the fangirl quiet. If you all want to really watch me try and analyze the game, let me know and I’ll do my best, but without people banging down the door to read about Origins, there won’t be any “Interesting Cases” of it.

So let’s try something different.

Let’s Talk About… Your Second-Favorite Game

Okay!

MGS2.jpg

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

I love this game. In fact, I love this whole series. I’m saving up for an HD television so I can finally play Phantom Pain and actually know what the heck is happening. I played MGS4 for almost 10 hours straight, through the night, and still managed to drag myself to work the next day. I can sing the whole Snake Eater theme song. I can recite Snake’s monologue from the end of MGS2, and at one point I had pages of scribbled notes from trying to figure out the entire plot and timeline of the series without resorting to the internet. Yeah. Sort of a fan.

I remember when I first played Metal Gear Solid on PSOne, I… didn’t finish it. It took me forever to get past the first level, because I wasn’t very good, and I didn’t like that I sometimes had to actually hurt people. But my lack of abilities reigned supreme, and so I played through the beginning a bunch of times (since I never really got too far into the game), fell in love with the characters, the story premise, and with Solid Snake’s voice. The game unfortunately went unfinished for a long time – until I was in college – but I picked up MGS2 when it came out anyway. And immediately loved it.

Of course, the beginning is just amazing, and after I played MGS I finally understood the camo Snake was wearing when he jumped off the bridge. But I digress.

This game hooked me from the start. Having not finished the previous title, I was intrigued as to why the super-soldier I loved so much was on the down-and-out, and was duly traumatized at the end of the tanker mission. And then Raiden came in to play and I was upset more for the loss of my hero Snake than being asked to play as another character. The story pulled me in. I wanted to know who these Patriot E-I-E-I-O people (this is a joke) were, who Dead Cell was, and why that freaking ninja was still around.

It was my favorite game for years. Although I would put it away for awhile, I would come back to it often.

It was during one of these “on again” times that… Well, it fell into my life again when I needed it most, like Dragon Age: Origins did, and so part of my love is also complete appreciation for its existence at that time in my life. I won’t bore you with details, but after one particular whirlwind week-of-awful following the Christmas of my high school senior year, I spent New Year’s Eve with Solid Snake and Raiden. It was like they reached out of the television and pulled me into their existence, letting me focus on saving someone else’s world instead of focusing on how mine seemed to have fallen apart.

I still pull it out every Christmas time, dust off my Playstation 2, and pop it in, because in spite of everything that was going wrong that one Christmas *mumble mumble* years ago, this game brought a smile back to my face. No matter what else is happening, to this day it still makes me so happy to play it.

So, while the Metal Gear series holds a special place in my heart because I have loved each game I’ve played, and found the story utterly fascinating, MGS2 had that magic touch that has not only held onto my attention and love for years, but also helped me out when I needed it!

What’s your favorite game? Have you written anything about it? What about your second-favorite game?  Let’s talk about them in the comments!

Thanks for stopping by, and I’ll see you soon!

    1. Oh! I meant in the game itself! I can’t read the map well or make out any text on my screen because of the TV’s resolution/text size. I hammered through the first hour and have already surpassed my expected “WTF is going on” level. I’m certain that the story will become more convoluted after playing the whole game! haha

      1. To be honest, I’m still a little surprised you’re able to track as many games as you are, knowing you don’t have a HD tv. You’re still playing on a CRT, right?

I kept my CRT long, long after the industry moved beyond it, and I loved that thing, but with this last console generation, things just stopped working for me. Dragon Age Inquisition was the worst I got before I upgraded; couldn’t read anything, Parts of the display weren’t even showing on screen, and it really made for quite the stressful entry into an otherwise fun experience.

        1. I’m a little surprised, too. I’ve definitely missed/messed up a bunch of stuff in Andromeda, and Inquisition was a trainwreck once I moved out of my apartment and left the HDTV behind (it came with the apartment, so… yeah). “Stressful” is a good word for it.

I think I saw a sale happening at a local electronic store, so I might go see if they have a small TV for a low price.

  1. Great post! I haven’t played either of the games mentioned. I have written about my favorite games before. I can’t really rank them as 1, 2, 3 but definitely Gears of War, Fable and Oblivion are the top of tghe tier games that I loveeeeee. Now that I thnk about it Civilization, Halo Wars, Marip Party and Snowboard Kids 2 are classic favorites as well! There’s so many games to choose from lol.

    1. Those are fantastic games, as well! It can be difficult to rank games, can’t it? I think overall that’s a good problem to have!

Snowboard Kids 2 sounds fascinating. I’m always on the lookout for winter sport games haha.

  2. My favorite game is Oblivion, which, sadly, I haven’t really written anything about. I should remedy that at some point.

And my second favorite game (probably) is The Witcher 3. I can’t get enough of carefully crafted rpgs! With how awesome Horizon Zero Dawn is, I’ll have to update my top games list by the end of the year. But that is a good problem to have.

    1. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Oblivion! I agree that having too many good games available is a great problem haha. But Witcher 3 and Horizon: Zero Dawn are such heavy hitters, I don’t blame you for having either one vying for top spots!!

  3. “What’s your favorite game? Have you written anything about it? What about your second-favorite game?”

I don’t know if I can answer these questions. They fluctuate depending upon my mood.

That said, I too love MGS2. I haven’t returned to it in a long time but the series (sans V) is something I really love.

    1. Who knew that the toughest questions I’d ask would be about picking favorite games? haha

I’d agree that there are some games I like at different times. And I’ve heard that MGS5 is a bit of an… interesting addition to the MGS family. From what I’ve played, I’d agree, but I’m still hoping to get through it one day, since it is part of the MGS lineup.

  4. Cool spin on this question… a second favorite is not something I’ve thought of! I find it hard to separate games I love, my favorite games, and what I think are the “best” games… all terms that are pretty synonymous but make me think of different games.

A weird one that may be my second favorite? Super Punch-Out. I’ve been meaning to write about it – it’s a game I have consistently revisited over the last 25 years, always offering a fresh, fun challenge that needs to be relearned if enough time has passed. FFVI may be my pick for the best game ever, but it’s the story and experience that drive me to that opinion. The timeless, fun-as-hell gameplay of Super Punch-Out puts it among my “favorites”.

    1. Thank you! Yes, all those categories tend to blur together for me, too.

Super Punch-Out! That’s an oldie but a goody, isn’t it?? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it 🙂 It’s so interesting to see which games hold their replay value over time and distinguish themselves as “classics,” isn’t it?

And I like what you said about FFVI versus Super Punch-Out. I wonder if it’s a pattern that second-favorites have more concrete, nameable reasons for their place in our hearts, and our favorites have a more emotional, nebulous reason…

  5. I for one would like to see you analyze DA Origins in an “Interesting case of…” format, if you ever decided to do so. Meh to being biased! If a game is special to you, there’s no shame playing down the flaws and delacring how awesome it is! That being said, I stay away from trying to review the FFXIII trilogy. No one needs to see me give it a score of 9,001 out of 10, and then praise Lightning as the best character in the history of video games, ever!! 🙂

Your whirlwind week-of-awful sounds like it sucked! I’m really glad you found peace in the virtual world. MGS is still a series I need to get into. I vow to vanquish that evil backlog monster, someday…

    1. Ha! Maybe I’ll wait until April Fools Day 😉 And I’m duly impressed: 9,001 out of 10?

When you get around to Metal Gear, let me know 😉 Although I’m just excited you’re playing Origins, so I’m happy as a clam as it is!

      1. That’s right! The glorious FFXIII trilogy deserves no less than a 900.1% score, in my incredibly biased opinion. 😀

Will do! Hopefully it will be before 2020 but who knows? Thank you for brainwashing me into trying Origins! I’m definitely loving it so far. I’m also ecstatic you are playing, and not hating, FF13 🙂

  6. I love this idea! You’re right that people don’t generally talk about their second favorite game. Well, I kind of do, since when I name my top games, I tend to do it in a top 3 fashion, so I usually at least mention my second favorite, which is Super Mario World. There are some days where I feel like Super Mario World is my absolute favorite, so it’s definitely up there! I’ve said so much about it in the past, but I just think it’s the most perfect 2D Mario, in terms of gameplay, graphics, sound, and power-ups. Mario feels so fluid whether in cape form or with Yoshi, and I just love how the world map works in that game. It’s one of the closest games to perfection I can think of, and I play it at least once a year!

    1. Yeah, our poor second-favorite games! haha

That’s a fantastic game! I’m wondering now if there’s a pattern for what make a second-favorite the *second* favorite… because like I said somewhere else, it seems like second-favorites are more just “fun” games, whereas favorite games tend to have some sort of emotional component to them… hm…

      1. For me, the second favorite game could have been the first in an alternate reality where my first choice (Ocarina of Time) didn’t exist. I have fond memories with both, but you’re right that OoT has more emotion associated with it.

  7. My favorite game I’d obviously FFVII, which I never shut up about lol. I do try to look at it through the lens of numerous critiquing structures, and even though it definitely has its flaws and problematic aspects, I truly do feel the deeper and symbolic meanings within more than override the foibles. I’m hoping to work on some of my theology and comparative posts soon, too. It’s just finding the time.

My second favorite game is FFIX, buuuuut my second favorite game that isn’t a Final Fantasy…hm prior to this past week, I probably would’ve said Dear Esther, but now I think it might be SOMA, because existential horror is kind of my thing lol. It’s in FFVII; its in FFIX or at least it’s suffered by both the MC and (pseudo) antagonist perpetrated by the actual, underlying antagonist, though in IX, the truth is far sadder, and while DE doesn’t have a blatant horror aspect, there’s a melancholy and sadness to the question of what constitutes worthwhile existence.

I can’t say too much about SOMA without spoiling, but your psych mind will LOVE it.
