Spirits ‘n’ Sprites: Yoshi’s Eggy Nog

A gamer walks into a bar…

…and asks for Yoshi’s Eggy Nog.

Spirits ‘n’ Sprites is open again for the holidays and we’re just in time for a festive one inspired by everyone’s favorite green anthropomorphic dinosaur. If you’ve missed our previous cocktails, you can find the recipes here.

Oh, Yoshi. Where would Mario be without you? Still crying somewhere alone on your island, I imagine. Yes, I know the name of the drink is cheesy, but hopefully you’ll find some holiday cheer in this glass of warm eggnog, just like Mario finds comfort in his companion’s warm heart.

The recipe makes two cups, but comes from a recipe I use to make… well, a bit more. So you can definitely alter the recipe as needed.

This drink may contain alcohol, and so please do not attempt to make or drink the alcoholic version unless you are of legal drinking age in your country.

Yoshi’s Eggy Nnog
Core flavor: 50% egg/50% nog

Ingredients (eggnog):
2 cups (0.5 liter) milk
3 whole cloves (or about 2-3 small pinches of ground cloves)
2-1/4 tsp. (11 mL) vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. (1/6 oz??) ground cinnamon
6 egg yolks
3/4 c. (6 oz.) sugar
2 cups (0.5 liter) light cream
1/4 tsp. (1/12 oz?? a very small amount of) nutmeg
1 1/4 cups (0.3 liters) rum or spiced rum (optional)

OR if you just want to get to the Yoshi’s egg part, buy eggnog at the store of your choosing (but that’s significantly less fun haha).

Ingredients (Yoshi’s egg):
marshmallow fluff
green food dye
toothpicks

Making Eggnog:

Combine milk, cloves, cinnamon, and 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) vanilla in a saucepan and heat over low heat for 4-5 minutes. Slowly bring to a boil.

Meanwhile, combine egg yolks and sugar until light yellow and fluffy. Remove the milk mixture from the stove and slowly (SLOWLY!!) pour into egg mixture and stir. Pour this mixture into a saucepan (or combine eggs and sugar in a saucepan to begin with, if you choose), and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for about 3-4 minutes or until mixture is of an acceptable eggnog consistency. DO NOT bring the mixture to a boil. If you used whole cloves, strain the mixture to remove them, and let the nog cool for an hour or so.

When cooler, mix in cream, remaining vanilla extract, nutmeg, and rum (if you are so inclined).

Adding Yoshi

Remove a small amount of marshmallow fluff from the jar and add a few drops of green food coloring to it. Stir with a toothpick. You can now decorate your eggnog a few different ways. If you “draw” little green circles inside the glass so the dots show through, be sure to carefully pour eggnog into the glass so as not to smear the fluff (which is a lot trickier than it sounds). Or, pour the eggnog into a glass/mug and decorate the top with small dots of the green fluff so it looks like one of Yoshi’s famous eggs.

Sit back and enjoy, because this is probably the most labor-intensive drink we’ve made here so far…

  1. OMG… there’s spiced rum in this 😀 😀 😀

*calms self* This is brilliant! I will definitely be trying this out next week sometime!! It sounds like a lot of work, but so totally worth the effort (well, I may be lazy and just buy the eggnog… we’ll see, haha). And poor Yoshi definitely needs a few of these after listening to Baby Mario whine so much.

  2. I’m not an eggnog fan, but this does seem a very solid recipe. Never tried making it myself, so maybe fresh homemade, especially with all these ingredients added, would be a bit better than I’ve had in the past.

  3. I am definitely trying this for New Year’s! I figure the green spots work as festive garnish for the non-gaming relatives. 😛

And I can’t tell you how excited I am for next month’s drink! 😀
