Let’s Talk About…: One Last Thing

We’re back with our final “Let’s Talk About…” post! I can’t believe all the things we’ve chatted about over these past few months! Be sure to check them out if you haven’t already!

Let’s Talk About…: a game we haven’t talked about yet.

Like, ever?

Okay.

I actually really like all the LEGO games, which is strange to think about because I don’t talk about them all that much. But one aspect I particularly enjoy is that, in spite of their lighthearted nature, they really delve into the lore and are solid, “canonically accurate” games.

After all, it was through the LEGO games that I learned that Green Lantern isn’t the only Lantern in existence, after being confused as to why he kept showing up in different-colored costumes.

I learned that not only do they come in different flavors, but they apparently have different powers because of it, too! The more you know, right?

But I digress. I was talking about LEGO  Star Wars. I really love Star Wars, I really love LEGOs, and I really love video games that have couch cooperative play, so… what’s not to like? But I think the thing that I enjoy the most about these games is that, while they can seem silly, they are really solid games that play out like all the best parts of a comic book coupled with the imaginative world that only LEGOs can create.

That, and my friend and I both resorted to going into “pro mode” simultaneously during one particularly difficult pod race section, which resulted in us laughing at each other (and also completing the challenge, so it worked).

And join us next week as our discussions take a bit of a turn from the games to the gamers who love them…

  1. Nice read Athena! I still have Lego Star Wars on the Wii, and I do think that a lot of the appeal is not just the OCD-nature of the gameplay but as you say the fact that it’s “canonically accurate.”

It feels like you’re getting to see inside the sets and action set-pieces from the movies, while the John Williams soundtrack is playing, and the blasters are firing all around.

I also have the Lego Indiana Jones game – it’s not as good a game as Star Wars, but being able to play out the major action beats from the movies while listening to the isolated John Williams score is really great.

    1. Thank you, sir! I love that description of seeing inside the sets a lot!

My friend has the Indiana Jones Lego game, and she said something similar. I tease because, well, Star Wars vs Indiana Jones……. Haha I’m kidding, of course. John Williams is worth anything that happens in those games haha

  2. I really enjoy all the Lego games I have played. They are fun to play, the jokes within the games and just seeing some of the abilities of characters can be really good. I haven’t got round to playing Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga yet but it is on my list to be played… one day, maybe this year.

  3. I love LEGO to death, and the LEGO Star Wars games were brilliant. My favourite brick-based game has to be the Marvel Superheroes entry. The character roster was enormous, it was gloriously silly, and no other game would let you fly up to the top of a skyscraper and ice-slide all the way down to the pavement as Iceman (my favourite superhero).

  4. Growing up, if I didn’t have a video game controller in my hand, I had a bunch of Lego blocks. The pirate sets were my favourites! Yarr!! 😀

Anyway, I own one of the Lego Star Wars games but haven’t played it yet (that time thing again). I do remember really enjoying a game called Lego Racers on the Nintendo 64. You could build your own car and Lego driver!! So cool.

    1. Why not both?? haha

I get you. They’re really fun! I never played Lego Racers, but I did play the podracer game on N64, where you were able to customized your racer, which was neat. I was pretty good at it, too… Doesn’t compare to actually building your car and driver, though! haha

  5. Funny thing, I just finished playing through LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars. I love a LEGO game and the Star Wars ones are very much favorites of mine. Now to find time to sink in to LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

  6. I haven’t played any of the LEGO games myself but I’ve watched the stepson play plenty. It’s good knowing there’s nothing in them which is going to be inappropriate for him – and the humour appeals to adults as much as it does kids, which makes watching him play pretty fun!

  7. I never played any lego ganes tbh but I ve watched some streamers and Youtubers play them. Unfortunately the games just dont interest me that much even though they are pretty solid games.

  8. I’ve played a few here and there, and, well, they just don’t really hold my interest. I don’t know what it is, but I just have a hard time getting into their engine. A shame, because ordinarily I’d love seeing so many properties made into lighthearted fun-time form.

    1. That’s fair. Even as much as I love them, they can sometimes be hard to get into since they are pretty *simple.* I think the only ones I’ve ever really fully played through are the Star Wars ones, as much as I like them. *shrugs* They’re good for a laugh sometimes, though!
