Three-peat: Sunshine Blogger Award

Oh my goodness! Such love and flattery from other bloggers! I’m very honored to have been nominated by I Can’t Believe It’s Not Blogger, a very friendly blogger with some great articles and who is definitely worth checking out.

And I’m pretty excited that this is the third time AmbiGaming Corner has been nominated for this award. After all…

The Sunshine Blogger Award is a peer recognition for bloggers that inspire positivity, joy, warmth, and any other emotions you feel when you think about the sun.”

The Rules:

  • Thank blogger(s) who nominated you in a blog post and link back to their blog.
  • Answer the 11 questions the blogger asked you.
  • Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award (Editor’s note: fair warning: I didn’t do this)and write them 11 new questions.
  • List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.

The Questions:

“What is your all-time favorite sporting moment (personal or witnessed)?”

It’s not a sporting moment, but it was a physical feat. When I was 24, I was diagnosed with scoliosis after a very painful year of not being able to walk (long story). I couldn’t walk down the hall at my job (to the point where my clients – all in wheelchairs – started asking if I wanted a ride), and getting up and down stairs and up and down off the floor was a nightmare. I went to physical therapy, and my therapist told me that I probably wouldn’t be able to do any sort of running or jumping again, at least without hurting myself.

In response, I decided I was going to run a 5K. Because of course I did.

And so, once I was able to walk without pain, and I had finished my therapy, I began training. A year after finishing therapy, my family went down the shore, and… I ran the 2.5 mile boardwalk, only slightly shorter than my 5K goal.

I hadn’t ever run that amount in one go since before the whole debacle with my back, and the thing that struck me was that there was no fanfare, no cheering, no fuss, no muss. There was nothing remarkable about what I had done. After all, I was just another young woman running on the boardwalk that summer morning.

Truth be told, for such an accomplishment (for me) to be seen as unremarkable to the people around me was strangely gratifying. I’ll let you interpret that as you will.

“Which food item would you most like to bring into reality from a film or video game?”

Lembas bread from The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

“In your opinion, what is the greatest episode of The Simpsons?”

I never really got into The Simpsons, so I think whichever episode is your favorite is the greatest one.

“What is your favorite blog post you feel has been overlooked?”

It’s mostly because it’s one of the first ones I wrote, but I really love the choices series I wrote, and over it’s lifetime it’s gotten maybe 75 total views across the three articles.

For the most part, though, I think my articles have gotten the attention that they deserve. I’m sometimes surprised when posts aren’t as popular as I thought they would be, but I can’t really expect everyone to be as crazy about Dragon Age as I am.

“What is your favorite album?”

I actually don’t think that I have one. The type of music I listen to changes with my mood, but I love a variety of artists, from various classical groups, to Jewel, to Peter, Paul, and Mary, to P!nk, to specific songs by too many different artists to name.

“To the nearest thousand, how many cigarettes has the smoking man smoked in the X-Files? (Extra marks for workings out)”

One thousand too many to be healthy for his lungs.

“If there was one message you conveyed with your blog, what would you hope it would be?”

I would hope that people would understand that video games are a viable entertainment medium, and would be more willing to take a look beneath the pixels and programming and see that video games hold up a mirror in which we can examine ourselves and our community.

“If you could sit down and have a beer with any video game character, who would it be?”

Samantha Traynor (with or without cheeky kiss). Or maybe Thane.

Or, you know what? Hawke from Dragon Age II.

Let’s just make it a party, shall we?

“What colour is the most over-rated?”

Chartreuse. It sounds fancy, but it will always be “baby crap yellow” to me.

That’s all you’re going to think of, now…

“Would you rather fight 100 duck sized horses, or one horse sized duck?”

100 duck-sized horses. Ducks are nasty enough at the size they are; I can’t imagine one being horse-sized…

“Is it ethically right for Pokemon trainers to keep Pokemon?”

I guess so. I mean, as long as the Pokemon are okay with it (they’re sentient aren’t they?). Or maybe they’re bred to be okay with being kept. This is like asking if it’s ethical for people who keep dogs and cats as pets.

My Nominees:

Aether from Lost to the Aether – a great blog with something for everyone. Whether you like serious commentary or fun let’s plays (or something in between), Aether injects his sense of humor and sharp intellect into everything he writes. A must read, for sure!

Red Metal from Extra Life Reviews – an insightful game reviewer who has recently started a series asking his readers questions about issues that arise within gaming. I always enjoy reading his opinions and insights into video games, and he’s definitely worth checking out!

The Dragon’s Tea Party – if there is a blog that can bring a smile to my face, it’s this one. I mean, it’s not everyone who can write an article about a bird dating sim that is entertaining, funny, and somehow not creepy. A blog worthy of your time!

My Questions:

  1. If you could change one thing about AAA gaming, what would it be?
  2. Do you think pineapple belongs on pizza?
  3. Is there an article on your site that you would write differently, knowing what you know now? Which one?
  4. What’s the weather like near you today?
  5. Do you like pancakes or waffles better?
  6. Is there anything about your gaming hobby/habits that you don’t like?
  7. Do you have a preference between JRPGs and western RPGs?
  8. When does an open-world game begin to suffer from open-world bloat?
  9. What is the most memorable line of dialogue in a game?
  10. Quick! You have 3 seconds to grab one game from your collection. Which one to do you grab and why?
  11. Do you collect anything? What is it?

And, as always, if you want to answer these questions in the comments, please do so!

Thank you again to I Can’t Believe It’s Not Blogger for the nomination! I’m looking forward to seeing the new nominees’ answers, as well!

Thanks for stopping by, and I’ll see you soon,
~ Athena

  1. Thanks for the mention! Some great questions there to answer! Will definitely be getting around to it!
Well done on your 5k run, it’s so impressive that that’s what you wanted to do after your therapy. Makes you wonder how many people you see every day that are accomplishing something new!

    1. It is well deserved! Looking forward to hearing what you have to say 🙂

Thank you! I’m not sure if it was smartness or pigheadedness that drove me, but either way it worked haha. I think that’s what it was: people do things every day that are remarkable for them, but not “remarkable” in the way we think of the word. Definitely something to keep in the back of one’s mind!! (mine included haha)

  2. Hey, thanks for the nomination! I’ll definitely be sure to answer it in a post sometime next week. I’m glad you’ve liked reading my reviews that much; your writings are insightful as well. Until then, I’ll give my two cents on the questions you were asked.

You were diagnosed with scoliosis? I’m really sorry to hear that. I don’t think I know anyone with it, but I know it’s a troublesome condition. Glad to hear it didn’t stop you from running the 2.5 mile boardwalk! I’m not much of sports fan, but I did catch a glimpse of that extremely long Wimbledon match in 2010 between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut. It lasted three days and the final score was 70–68.

I have yet to watch The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I will get on that soon – before the end of the year. I managed to snag the whole trilogy on Blu-Ray for a great price.

There are a lot to choose from, but one of my favorites is “Homer’s Enemy”.

Yeah, my most overlooked reviews tend to be my early ones as well, which I’m okay with considering they are also my weaker reviews. Otherwise, I’m kind of surprised my Uncharted 2 review wasn’t a hit considering it’s one of only two times I’ve written an unambiguously positive review of a Naughty Dog game (the other time being Uncharted: The Lost Legacy).

As with my favorite Simpsons episodes, there are a lot of albums I could choose that I don’t think I could narrow it down to one. Some of my favorites include: Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart, Revolver by the Beatles, Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk, Spiderland by Slint, Nevermind by Nirvana, Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A., Master of Puppets by Metallica… I could go on quite a long time with this and I’m leaving a lot of good ones out, but those were some of the first to spring to mind.

I think I heard the actor had quit smoking by the time the show started, and he ended up using herbal cigarettes. Then again, they could still be normal cigarettes in-universe, so it’s something of a moot point.

I’m not entirely sure… The problem with that question is that I don’t drink alcohol.

I’m not sure if I can really think of an overrated color, but your answer is good enough for me. For a color with a fancy name, it sure is uninteresting.

I’d go with the one horse-sized duck because I like a challenge. The battle might end up being like Shadow of the Colossus.

The Pokémon issue crossed my mind as well. Ultimately, I feel it’s ethically sound because the games make it pretty clear that the relationship has no true real-world analogy.

    1. You’re welcome! It’s very well deserved 🙂 I’m looking forward to hearing your responses!

Yeah.. it’s one of those things where it’s not bad enough to be “bad” (and you can’t tell from looking at me/my shoulders are even, etc.), but it’s bad enough to be really annoying sometimes. That Wimbledon match sounds like an endurance trial for everyone involved……

I always recommend Lord of the Rings, and that’s really cool you were able to get the whole set for a reasonable price!

I like these responses, and I believe you about the Simpsons. I also am now hoping a huge duck made it into the new Shadow of Colossus….

  3. Congrats on the award! 😀

Um, I’ve always identified chartreuse with Key Lime Pie and I do not think I want to identify it (or any pie) with baby secretions.

  4. Going from crippling scoliosis to being able to run a 5K is quite an achievement. Definitely a great athletic moment. And I definitely love the method of using games as a tool for introspection.

Thanks for your kind words, and the nomination! I’ll likely have a response to that ready to go in the near future.

    1. Thank you! It was one of those things where although I don’t have a “bad” case (you’d never know it by looking at me), it’s “bad enough,” so thank you. I was pretty proud of myself that day.

And you know me: any reason for introspection is a good one!

You’re very welcome! It’s well deserved, and I’m looking forward to reading your thoughts!

  5. That is an amazing feat. Running another 5k is one of my goals, though right now I’m more in the situation you were in but working on it 🙂 Congrats on that and of course your nomination. I love all your answers and questions, a few of the latter I might answer below!

I’m’ assuming AAA gaming are the big game companies? I’d say have more of the indie game heart. Like…I don’t know how to put it. I find indie games tend to go off the beaten path and I like that. They’re more likely to not have combat/violence as their focus, and while I don’t have a problem with “slay all the monsters!” it’s nice when a game does more, because damn near every game does that. There was an awesome video I watched that covered this very thing, and I’d never really thought about it before, but games have the ability to do anything, but most usually focus on combat/killing things. This doesn’t mean they don’t have a nice variety, but it did give me food for thought.

Anything you want on pizza belongs on pizza 🙂 The absolute outrage about pineapple on pizza always confused and annoyed me. I guess I just don’t like shaming people for what foods they like. I’m not super fond of it, but someone else liking it doesn’t affect my life…unless we’re ordering a pizza together 😀

I want to update my “Heart of Darkness, Angel of Light” defense of Sephiroth essay, because I wrote it a few years ago, and I not only have a few things to add, but I’m a better writer. Granted, I do cover a lot of them in more recent essays, but I think that’s my most shared at 76 or so. Not a high number, but not terrible for a little known blog.

    It’s snowing!

Hm, I really like French toast the best, and now I want some nooooo D: Between the two I’d have to say pancakes, even though waffles have those little squares to hold syrup.

I don’t get to do it enough. I also wish I could organize it like I do my reading, but it’s just not possible. I tend to finish most of the books I start, but some games don’t have a definite finish and even ones that do, you might put aside for a while. I really want to put playing time on my to do list, but that didn’t work out too well last time I did so. I just kind of play whenever I have a spare moment, which is sadly not that often.

I prefer JRPGs, but I’m pretty sure that’s well known by now. Despite this Mass Effect is one of my all time favorite series, and, in fact, it brought me into the Western RPG world ♥

Er, well, most memorable line of dialogue probably won’t be memorable for anyone else, because it was something I could directly relate to. I can’t remember exactly what it was (how’s that for memorable I hear people screaming), but it was something Sephiroth said in FFVII during the start of the Nibelheim flashback scene having to do with him having no hometown and something else. It was then I knew this was going to be no ordinary game, and I suddenly cared about something, which hadn’t happened in a long time. TSN is being super vague!

Final Fantasy VII. If the world is ending I want my favorite game (which is about the world ending, fancy that) to be found with my bones after humanity rebuilds from the apocalypse. Hopefully, they’ll have or rediscover the technology to play it.

Books and game figurines. Those count I suppose? I’d collect toy/model cars, too. I LOVE toy/model cars and always look at them whenever I find them, but I don’t have space for them, and I’d want to keep a catalog so I haven’t started a collection yet.

    Fun fun questions!
