Mass Effect Month: Day 22 – Nightmare Difficulty

We’re back with our month-long Mass Effect challenge! For previous days, click here.

Mass Effect Month, Day 22: What was the hardest part of the game?

I was going to write some sappy answer like “saying goodbye to the characters I loved,” because that’s pretty true. Then I thought of the fight at Object Rho in the Arrival DLC, but then I remembered…

There is no way for me to convey to you my anger at this boss fight. I mean, I love Counselor Troi and all, but this boss fight kicked my butt so many times. If you watched my horrible video on it… well I know for a fact I don’t usually sound so angry when I’m playing a game.

I don’t know what it was. Maybe because as a sniper you’re at a distinct disadvantage with the terrain, but it doesn’t matter how many times I play through the game, Liara’s mom just totally decimates me.

Fun fact about the video… After I finished it, the game froze, the save was lost, and I had to do it all over again. I almost broke my controller, I’m not going to lie.

What about you? What was the hardest part of the game(s) for you? Let me know in the comments!

I should go,

  1. For me, it was one particular base on a random planet on Insane difficulty. It was just so brutal and the enemies were such bullet sponges. It was a side mission but I was young and bullish and insisted on beating it all the same. Brute force eventually got me through but it was an utterly shite time.

  2. ME3 had many hard moments simply because I played on the toughest difficulty, but I’m will go back to ME2 for the final boss fight. Not that the fight was super tough my any means, it was the fact that your entire crew could get wiped out at the end. I beat the boss, had several people die, and this could not stand. Started over, picked the line ups so carefully and purposely gave myself those who I saw as weak so they wouldn’t die. Doing that made my fight super hard as I had crew mates that I either didn’t know how to use, or made the fight harder than it needed. That combined with the fear of not knowing if the rest of my crew would make it made this a stressful moment, but one that I triumphed in as everyone survived.

    1. Yikes! I salute, you, sir!

My favorite battle by far was the Collector base!! So stressful, but I loved that every choice really mattered, and that feedback was instant sometimes. I also wiped out most of my crew, but because I just decided to “clear the map” from one side to the other instead of, you know, actually paying attention to what the game was telling me. Oops. So yeah, I went back and tried again, as well. But it was a game moment that was head and shoulders above the rest, either way!

  3. For whatever it’s worth, I was VERY entertained by your death montage in your LP. Counselor Troi is tough, man. Don’t feel bad at all! Asari Commandos are known across the galaxy for being pretty freaking ruthless.

I shamelessly played the trilogy on easy, so nothing caused me any grief. I did an Insanity difficulty run on Andromeda, which was surprisingly not that hard. New Game+ and cowardly Master Engineer, FTW! I guess the hardest part was hiding with patience while my minions mopped up the super-crushing bad guys. I have a more up close and punching type of gameplay style as a preference. 😛

Wait! Does the puzzle to reactivate the VI core on Noveria count? That was way over my head and very frustrating… Like I said, if I can’t punch it there isn’t much hope of me beating it, haha.
