Merry Blogmas!
We are back with our chorus of bloggers, singing our own version of “12 Days of Christmas.” Instead of leaping lords and turtle doves, we’ll be giving you 364 great gaming and blogging gifts. Check out our previous days, too, if you’re just joining us!
Thanks to OverthinkerY, LightningEllen, The Gaming Diaries, Shoot the Rookie, and Later Levels for striking the harp and joining the chorus!
And now, without further ado…
(To the tune of “12 Days of Christmas”):
On the tenth day of Blogmas, the gamers said to me:
What are three things you want non-gamers to know? (takes gasping breath to continue singing about 4 dramatic moments, 5 replay gems, 6 resolutions, 7 favorite posts, 8 beloved characters, 9 games to play, 10 reasons you’d play, 11 games you love, and don’t forget to link to gaming memories!)
- Video games aren’t unhealthy to play, and, in fact, can have many health benefits, including mental health ones, so you shouldn’t believe everything you read about it. Everything in moderation.
- Representation in media matters. Even the people who say it doesn’t matter change their tune when it’s suddenly their group being misrepresented, so please remember to have a little empathy when someone wishes they could see “themselves” a little more in games (or any media).
- Play is an essential part of learning, and there are times when play can (or even should) be unsupervised, and times for it to be supervised, in order for it to be most effective. This is the same for games, so get involved in your child’s hobby; games are not a babysitter.
I could go on and on (and do, if you peruse the blog a bit), but what is something you wish all non-gamers would learn about games in the new year? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for stopping by, and I’ll see you soon!
~Athena

I wish non-gamers would realize that many video games have complex narratives and characters that rival that of movies and television!
