Setting Up a Let’s Play, Week 2

And we’re back! If you’re just stopping in for this little adventure, you can catch up on all my shenanigans here.

Historical Background

As you know, last week was my first real test of setting up my equipment and attempting to test it. After a disappointing start and a “faulty” capture device, I’ve been awaiting word from the seller to see if I can get a refund for the device. I did somehow manage to unhook all of my wires and things, so my room is back to looking fairly normal again and I can walk around without tripping over a wire or fearing I’m going to break something.

Current State of Affairs

I haven’t heard back from the seller of the faulty capture device, which isn’t really surprising. I wasn’t expecting that type of service from a third-party seller from Amazon. So while my heart (and wallet) hurt quite a bit, I’ll chalk that money up as tuition for the school of experience.

Moving forward, I’m looking at picking up a new device and testing it the moment I have it in my possession. I’m probably going to stick with the same brand because of the system(s) I’ll be recording from and the reviews I’ve read, but if it’s new (and tested immediately) I don’t foresee having the same problems. I should have more information on the devices next week…

I also delved into the world of headphones, in order to not only help me be able to hear the games when I play in the middle of the night and other normal people in the house are sleeping, but also because I realized my microphone will pick up the sounds from the television, creating a weird effect when syncing up the audio and visuals. Thus I was sucked into the drama of how the PS3 doesn’t support USB headphones because of elusive explanation of “reasons.” But I think everything is sorted out, now, with the addition of another adapter (can’t wait to set everything up again this week…).I’ll also be trying out the headphones with the PS4, because they should work, but if they don’t… another return, I suppose.

For fun, I also turned my sights from the PS3 onto the PS4 for potential recording, as, you know, that’s the most current generation console in the Sony family. But because of the high definition resolution (and tiny in-game writing), some of the games that require any amount of reading or attention to detail are pretty difficult to get through on my little CRT-TV. The plan now is to play through some PS3 games while I save up for a new TV (and then I’ll be one of those game enthusiasts with two screens yuk yuk yuk). Until then, if I record anything from the PS4, I’ll sound like I have the reading ability of a four-year-old and won’t know anything about items in inventory or anything else that requires reading. Or details. Or aiming. Come to think of it, that’s pretty much the state of things with the PS3. So there’s that 🙂

I haven’t even attempted any of this with the Wii.

Lessons Learned This Week

All in all a much more positive week! I paid my “life experience” tuition and the lesson still stings, so it’s one I’ll definitely remember. I’ve also learned a lot about headphones, which will definitely come in handy if I’m ever on Jeopardy (har har). I’m looking forward to setting everything up and trying out some recording this week, so wish me luck!
